SNA FOUNDATION

Consistent with the philosophy of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), the non-profit SNA Foundation supports the economic and social well-being of Alaska Natives enrolled in the Seldovia Native Association by providing educational opportunities to eligible individuals.

The Foundation offers scholarships, grants, student aid, stipends, and other forms of support for educational training at accredited colleges and universities.

GUIDELINES

Eligibility

Eligible beneficiaries for the SNA Foundation Scholarship Program include:

  • Alaska Natives enrolled in Seldovia Native Association, Inc. pursuant to the 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act

  • Lineal descendants of SNA shareholders (children, grandchildren, etc., natural or adopted)

Qualifications

Applicants must be enrolled:

  • As full-time students

    • Undergraduate: 12 or more credit hours per semester

    • Graduate: 9 or more credit hours per semester

  • At an accredited college or university, or accepted into a post-secondary program

  • In a two-year or four-year undergraduate degree program or a graduate degree program

GPA Requirements

  • Achievement Scholarship: 3.0 GPA or higher

  • General Scholarship: 2.0–2.99 GPA

There is no Alaska residency requirement.

Scholarship Uses

Unless otherwise stated, scholarships may be applied toward:

  • Tuition

  • University fees

  • Books

  • Campus-related or approved room and board

 

All scholarships are subject to available funding.

Scholarship Decisions

  • Award selections are made by the SNA Foundation Awards Committee.

  • Applicants will be notified by mail only.

  • Allow 20 working days from the application deadline for decisions.

Application Deadlines

  • Application period opens: April 1

  • Deadline: July 1

  • Applications must be received or postmarked by the deadline to be considered.

Annual Scholarships

Achievement & General Scholarship Fund

These scholarships apply to the full academic year (two semesters).

Selection Criteria

Selection is based on multiple factors, including:

  • Scholastic achievement

  • Previous work performance

  • Educational and community involvement

  • Financial need

  • Recommendations

  • Year in school

  • Seriousness of purpose

  • Major field of study

  • Practicality of educational and career goals

  • Completeness of the application

Disbursement of Funds

  • Scholarship checks are sent directly to the college or university.

  • The institution administers the funds on behalf of the student.

  • A copy of the disbursement letter is also sent to the student.

  • Annual scholarships may be disbursed in one or two equal installments.

 

Important:

A copy of the previous semester’s transcripts must be submitted before the second installment is released or before a new scholarship can be awarded.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Applicants must submit all required materials by the deadline:

  • Completed, signed, and dated scholarship application

  • Official grade transcripts

    • High school transcripts for entering freshmen

    • College transcripts or GED certificate for others

  • Two (2) letters of recommendation

    • New letters required if previous ones are two or more years old

  • Proof of acceptance from the college/university (first-time applicants)

  • Birth certificate(s) showing lineal descent from an SNA shareholder

  • Photograph (optional)
